We checked carefully for bedbugs after seeing recent reviews that worried us, but didn’t find any. The mattress is wrapped in plastic as a precaution. The room itself was clean and nice, though the double bed is only 1.20 m wide, far too small for two people. Noise was a bigger problem: guests talked loudly late at night and early in the morning, there was street noise right below, and the downstairs cafe stayed noisy until around midnight. Smoke from the cafe also reached the second floor where the hostel is. I wouldn’t recommend staying here if you need a good night’s sleep before starting the Kumano Kodo.

We were checked in and on our way out in no time. The proprietor was really friendly and spoke fluent English. This is a handy stop for a pilgrimage hike, especially because they offer luggage storage, which we really needed. It’s right by Tanabe station. If you walk more than a minute from the station, you’ve already gone too far.

We loved staying here. The food, drinks, room, location, and hospitality were all top notch, especially for such an unbeatable price. Thanks so much for having us!

Other people in the shared dorm may wake you up. Some guests are noisy, and others get going early for the Kumano Kodo. Still, it’s a lovely place to unwind after the trail. The host was very friendly and helpful, the bed was comfortable, and the facilities were great. The bar is beautifully designed, with lovely lighting and a good menu. I had a pint of local IPA brewed down the road, and it was perfect.

We had a great time chatting with the guesthouse owner, and the bar was great too. The rooms are simple, but very clean and excellent value. It’s a really good place to stay in Tanabe, with the train station, plenty of restaurants, and shops close by.
