Kumano Backpackers

A convenient backpackers’ spot at a very good price. I was in the dorm, which was okay, and the house was well kept. There’s a shared kitchen and bathroom.

The location is extremely handy, and breakfast came with snacks, yogurt, bread, and a banana. The hostel itself was about what you’d expect, neither great nor terrible. But an incident with the host left us really uncomfortable. A guest was sitting in a dining chair by the stairs while the host came into the kitchen to show other guests around. Before they could move, he shoved the guest hard enough that the chair hit the table, then muttered curses at them. It felt aggressive and completely inappropriate, especially in a place where guests should feel safe. The atmosphere he created was unwelcoming, so I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

After five long days on the Kumano Kodi, we arrived to a bag of food, snacks in the common room, and complimentary tea and coffee. The place was clean and comfortable, with a nice shower and soaps. It really felt like coming home. Highly recommend.

The value was fantastic, and the host had me smiling and laughing. There are a few private rooms as well as a dorm, and the location is excellent. The cafe across the street, which is run by the same people, is very good. Definitely recommend.
