Shima Beach Hotel

That sunrise over Ise Bay was beautiful, and the sea view from our room was dazzling. We stayed here on a tour while my wife and I were making a pilgrimage to Ise Shrine. The hotel is right by the bay, with a beach just below for summer visits, and Ise Shrine is nearby too. The building is undeniably old, but our room was spacious and the food was delicious. Given how inexpensive the tour was, we felt the hotel offered very good value.

The room looks out over the ocean, and the meals were just right in size and really tasty. The inn staff were attentive throughout. It’s out of the way, but that adds to the old-fashioned, retro atmosphere. If you want staying at a ryokan to be part of the trip itself, this is a good choice; it has a different feel from business hotels focused on value.

The bathroom changing area has been renovated, with four dressing tables and pricey hair dryers, two Dysons and two Refas. I was excited to try them, and they’re known for leaving hair smooth. Nakai-san was so attentive that we left very satisfied. The food was delicious and generous, too. It had been about 10 years since our last visit, and this time it was just my wife and me, with our children now in college. The hotel and rooms are old, but everything was thoroughly cleaned. You can stroll along the waterfront or walk to Ishigami Shrine (where one woman's wish is granted). I’d say 4.5 stars, and it made for a relaxing, satisfying stay.
