Apa Hotel Machidaeki-Higashi

I found dust piled at eye level across the surfaces, easily removable marks on the walls, grime baked onto the shower and bath walls, and black mould. I told the staff about the mould and the aircon filter, which had about an inch of dirt on it. My understanding is that hotel aircon filters are generally cleaned monthly. They just said “ok” and stared at me until I insisted they clean it. When I came back, only the things I’d specifically pointed out were done. The shower walls were still filthy and the dust was still there. I thought the shower stains might be permanent, but a disposable toothbrush got them off. The cleaning standards were horrifying.

A five minute walk gets you to Machida station, with shopping and dining also just five minutes away, so it’s easy to get around and find things. I hadn’t been to Japan in a while and chose APA Machida without knowing much about it. I’m glad I did. The bed was comfortable and the room kept me warm in the cold. Staff were very friendly and spoke English. They helped me with the laundry machine and with using the lobby restaurant. I’d stay with APA anytime I’m in Japan. Thanks.

The staff and amenities were great. One thing that may catch you off guard is that they ask you to leave your key card at the front desk when you go out. You just pick it up there when you come back. There’s no printing service, but there is coin laundry, a microwave, and more.

It’s clearly an older hotel, but it’s well maintained and very clean. The location is good, and the staff are polite and helpful. My only complaint was the pillows: they’re thin and firmer than I’m used to.
