I stayed for about two weeks and found a real sense of community at DEN. I was travelling solo but soon felt at home in this Tokyo hostel. During my two-month trip, I stayed at four other hostels, and none came close to DEN for its social atmosphere, cosiness, and convenience. The front desk, kitchen, and living room are close together, so guests naturally strike up conversations as they come and go. It never felt awkward to ask staff for something, unlike in places where reception is separate from the areas guests use. The staff seem chosen for being welcoming and interested in getting to know people visiting from around the world. At 6'2" (188 cm), I fit comfortably in the beds. The curtains kept morning light from bothering me, and DEN provides ear plugs and face masks for free. If you want a community where you can meet people and make your trip more memorable, this place is for you. I can’t say enough about how nice it was. After moving on to other hostels, I was still able to visit for Running Club, Smash Bros with friends, and calligraphy class.

I wouldn’t stay here again. I got bed bug bites all over my hand, and when I reported it to reception, they brushed it off as my responsibility and said it was “just bugs.” That was disappointing and concerning. The nightly happy hour didn’t feel very social either. Most nights it was just the staff and me, and the mood was dull. The staff were less friendly than I expected, and even small interactions felt unwelcoming. For instance, although happy hour was advertised to start at 7:00 pm, I was turned down for a drink at 6:59 and told to wait exactly one more minute. Those small things added up and affected my stay. I realize other people may have had a better time. This was my experience.

The location works well for Tokyo Station, though getting there from the stations still means a fair walk. Keep that in mind if you’re carrying a lot of luggage. The women’s dorm is small and poorly ventilated, and it smelled like feet to me, probably from the slippers they provide. There wasn’t really any socializing among the women. You get what you pay for.

The location is perfect, and the service was really good, though we didn’t need much help during our stay. It’s a very good price for the facilities. I’d seen comments on Booking about short blankets and cold rooms, but neither of us had that problem, even though we’re both about 6.2 feet tall.

The prayer room was the main reason I chose Hostel Den, and I was so glad to find it there. It’s a rare and important feature for travelers like me. I also appreciated the towel and clothing rack with a hanger in each bunk space, plus the free slippers and first towel. You can tell a lot of thought went into the design and the services. The hostel is cozy, clean, and in a great spot, close to several kombini, places to eat, bus and metro stops, and a few Anytime Fitness gyms. The staff were friendly, professional, and helpful. I only learned the names Mio and Kentaro, though I wish I’d gotten everyone’s. It suits me well as a backpacker who doesn’t party or enjoy big, loud groups. I liked the calm, natural chance to meet people and the 9pm lights-out, especially since there’s an individual light in each bunk. I’ll stay here again next time I’m in Tokyo. Thanks to everyone at Hostel Den! I appreciated your help. ☺️
