Hotel Marutani

The location is perfect, with easy access to lots of places. I had a really comfortable, enjoyable stay, and the hotel was very clean. They have free coffee and tea 24 hours a day, plus a smoking room in the lobby. Thanks for the wonderful hospitality. ⭐️💙🙏🏼

We always stay here when we're in the Ueno area. It's small and old, but well maintained for its age and has a Showa-era business hotel feel. The onsen was clean and spacious, and the temperature was kept just right. The staff are very attentive. I asked for two pillows, but only one was available that night. They brought the other one the next day while we were out, and that little detail meant a lot. Housekeeping is available daily too. Kudos to the front desk and housekeeping team. I agree with other comments that the bathroom is very old, and I wish they'd renovate it, but it is clean.

The only thing going for this place is its convenient location, close to the subway, shops, and restaurants. That doesn't make up for the awful conditions, and I wouldn't recommend it. The room was filthy. Dust had built up under the bed, and the carpet was so dirty I wouldn't even let my 15-month-old daughter crawl on it. The air conditioning didn't work at all. Instead of fixing it, they gave our family of three a tiny six-inch fan for an already cramped room. The fridge was nearly useless; drinks wouldn't get cold, let alone freeze. The bathroom was dismal too. The light was dim, and the shower curtain was covered in mold. If I could give the hotel zero stars, I would.

The staff were genuinely kind and helpful, but the bathroom was deeply disappointing during my week-long stay. Flies kept appearing every day, at least twenty new ones whenever I came back, and seemed to be coming from under the bathtub. There was a visible gap between the tub and wall, with mold creeping out from behind it and speckling the surrounding walls. The shower curtain was moldy too. It was hard not to picture an infestation breeding beneath the tub. The poor cleanliness made the stay uncomfortable and unsanitary. I sincerely hope management takes this seriously and gives the bathrooms a proper deep clean. The staff and guests both deserve better.
