Ryokan Asakusa Shigetsu

Being in the heart of Asakusa, just a couple of blocks from Senso-ji Temple, meant we could enjoy the neighborhood in the quiet mornings and evenings. Walking around felt like stepping into traditional Japan. The ryokan’s calm atmosphere and traditional design made it a lovely first introduction to Japanese culture. It became one of the most special parts of our trip, not just a place to sleep. From arrival, the staff treated us with real warmth, care, and respect, paying attention to even the smallest details and making us feel at home. We’re very grateful for the stay and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone wanting a memorable, authentic start to their time in Tokyo.

The location was good, but I'm not sure I'd book again. Our room was extremely small, even though the rooms beside ours were much larger. We were on the middle, fifth floor and had some water leaking from the roof. The onsens are on the sixth floor, so we guessed the water might have been coming from the onsen. The baths themselves were tiny too, probably only big enough for two or three people. It was an okay stay overall.

This was the one place of the four we stayed at that our whole family agreed we'd return to on our next trip to Japan. The location was ideal, the room was clean and a good size, and the staff were always available to help. They really went above and beyond.

The tatami room had a lovely view over Senso-ji, and the sixth-floor onsen was a real bonus. It was almost always empty when we wanted it, and felt nicer than the bathroom in our room. For a small group, it worked well as a semi-private bath when everyone went in together. The front desk also helped us arrange luggage delivery. There was an amenity bar stocked with the essentials and a lounge with free drinks. Getting around was easy, with very few transfers needed to reach places.
