It was an expensive stay, but in my 20 years living in Japan I’ve never had a more relaxing getaway. Our one night felt like a trip of two or three days. The meals were amazing, and having a private onsen in the garden just outside the door was wonderful. Everything felt very private and peaceful. The property was immaculate, and the buildings were made to a quality I haven’t seen elsewhere in Japan, almost temple-like.

Our rooms seemed brand new, with a blend of Japanese and rustic Scandinavian design. The spring water is drawn directly from a source that’s been around for 650 years, which is rare in Japan. No extra spring water is added, and it isn’t heated further. Dinner was delicious too, perhaps because we were the only guests and received deluxe treatment. This was one of the better ryokans I’ve stayed in, compared with Wa No Sato near Takayama, Yatsusunkan in Hida Furukawa, Shirahone Yamato Saito, and Tsuki hi tei in Nara.

The setting is secluded, though Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine is only 30-40 minutes away. The meals were delicious and generous, enough to leave you full. The spring water flows freely and feels like a real hot spring. It runs quite hot, so you have to adjust the temperature each time. The private open-air bath in the room is all yours, and it’s easy to nod off in it.

Such a quiet place for a restful stay. The hot spring is deeply soothing and leaves my skin feeling smooth. I’d love to stay for several nights if I had more time and money.
