Tottori City Hotel

The room was clean and had what I needed, and we could understand each other well enough with the staff’s English. Getting two free bottles of water at check-in was great. There are hotels nearer to the train station, so the location could be a little better, but for what we paid, this was a great deal.

Affordable, and clean and tidy, but tiny. I could barely open my suitcase in the room, which also had a strange smell, though it wasn’t strong enough to bother me much. There’s plenty of parking, but the spaces are extremely narrow. Parked between two cars, I could only squeeze myself out. I can’t call it a good choice, but it is an affordable one.

A simple, inexpensive place with a convenient bus stop right outside. You can take the bus to the sand dunes or the train station, and Tottori station is about a 12-minute walk away. Smoking is allowed in the hotel. It feels like a little time capsule of 1980s Japan. The service, old-fashioned smell, and dated layout all show that the place has seen better days. I visited in December, perhaps during the low point of the tourist season, and Tottori City Hotel gave me a warm refuge from the cold, lonely streets. Even with the Do Not Disturb sign on my door, staff left a Tupperware box with fresh towels, razors, hand towels, and other toiletries. I haven’t seen that kind of thoughtful gesture at other hotels I’ve stayed in. Simple, easy to reach, and inexpensive. Go stay at Tottori City Hotel!

The staff at the front desk were lovely and helpful, and could speak some English. They provided a nice amenities pack with a face mask and q tips for women, plus two free bottles of water. I’d pick up the breakfast coupon. The meal isn’t amazing, but it’s the most convenient choice since there aren’t many convenience stores or breakfast places right nearby. The rooms are a decent size and clean, though there’s a slightly funny, old smell. The dated decor and regular keys instead of keycards make the hotel’s age pretty clear. It’s conveniently walkable from Tottori Station, and good for what it is if you’re staying in Tottori.
