The staff were knowledgeable and helpful, so I felt safe on the lake. The guided kayak tour was a great experience and gave me a deeper understanding of the local wildlife and geography. The site is well maintained and very safe for kids, making it a good family holiday spot. After cycling 1600km around Hokkaido, I can honestly say my stay at Lakehouse Toyoka was second to none for its people, food, views, and activities. Watching the sun rise and set over Lake Toya was incredible. Kayaking to the island in the morning was magical, with calm water and a beautiful walk around the island. The wind picks up a bit in the afternoon, which makes for great sailing weather. They also offer E-bikes, a great way to explore inland. There are several places nearby to visit, just a short drive or bike ride away. I cycled around the lake and took the Usuzan ropeway for a majestic view across the whole lake and coastline. If you're exploring Hokkaido's scenery and want to have fun doing it, this is somewhere you can't miss.

The peaceful setting was a highlight: the lake is just a few steps away, and a scenic trail starts right outside. You’ll need a car to reach the lakehouse, or you can ask Jonny about private shuttle options. He was quick to respond when we were making inquiries. We were three adults in the Lavender Suite for two nights before the end of November 2025. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, with enough heat for the cold weather, including floor heating. We’d wondered if the bathroom might feel chilly, but managed fine. Jonas welcomed us and made sure my elderly parents were comfortable the whole time. Before arriving, I mentioned an Airbnb review about lots of bugs. Jonas reassured me, then showed us how to catch and keep one in their homemade trap when we arrived. We saw about three bugs in the room, but they didn’t affect our stay. We ate dinner at the lakehouse. The portions were more than enough for three, though the group has to choose either shabu shabu or sukiyaki. We also appreciated the warm porridge and sweet persimmons at breakfast. The extra bed for our third person was the one small drawback. You could feel the mattress springs when turning over. After two nights, I wished we’d spent more time relaxing at the lakehouse instead of driving around Lake Toya sightseeing. It was a memorable stay, and we hope to return with more family this year.

We stumbled across this place a couple of years ago while looking for somewhere cozy by the lake. John and his family welcomed us so warmly, and we had a lovely night in this one-of-a-kind lakehouse. There’s plenty of space in the rooms, and the big bathtubs are definitely worth using. The available equipment added a lot to the stay. We rented stand-up paddleboards and e-bikes, and might come back for a ski trip. Thank you!

John was a great help and pointed us to one of the best sushi spots in nearby Da-te. The Lake House sits around the midpoint of Lake Toya’s circular route, and our room was luxuriously spacious. The place was spotless and well equipped. We’d come back if we get the chance, maybe to try John’s glamping stay.

We had a wonderful time with Jon and Ayuko as our hosts. Ayuko’s dinner was the perfect finishing touch to the stay. There’s lots to do around here, from kayaking and sailing on the lake to go-karts. The home and its setting make for a magical getaway, and we’ll definitely be back.
