We loved waking up early for the sunrise. The view was so beautiful it felt like we were above the clouds. The outdoor onsen was great, and we went three times during our two-night stay. Service was fantastic, especially the English-speaking staff, which we hadn’t expected in such a small town. The hotel is on the far side of the lake from the onsen town, so it’s a bit out of the way, around 20 minutes to town and 30 minutes to the JR station. They have a free shuttle, which was a big help, but book it ahead. We arranged it the day before and that worked well. Breakfast was good both mornings: we had à la carte the first day and the buffet the second, and preferred the buffet for all the choices.

The room was new and well equipped, and the decor, views, and easy parking were all good. The service was excellent too. But the private bath was a letdown: it’s a wooden tub on the balcony, not a hot spring, and it was too cold to use outside. Maybe summer would be different. There isn’t much nearby, and the dinner we booked was just okay, eight average courses that didn’t feel worth €70 per person. For the same price, the private hot spring room we had at the Dai-ichi felt significantly better. If TOYA Nonokaze has a room available, I’d choose that instead.

For what we paid for the rooms, I came away pretty disappointed. There were spider webs in the dining room, and the food was mediocre at best, with overcooked meat. I expected more of the Japanese attention to detail from a hotel at this price. The onsen water also isn’t hot spring water. I’d suggest staying somewhere else where the facilities are better for the money.

A really nice, clean room with an amazing view over the lake made this a great place to get away and unwind. The staff were lovely, and the food was incredible. I’d happily recommend it, 10/10.
