This was a really nice stay, and I wish we’d booked longer. Sightseeing isn’t the main draw, but if you want to unwind in an onsen, eat traditional food, and hike in the Japanese mountains, the setting is hard to beat. The hotel sits at the edge of town with a mountain just behind it. It has seven floors, so the view from the onsen is great, though the privacy screen makes it a little hard to enjoy while bathing. At that height, I’m not sure the screen is needed, but others may feel differently. Our room was spacious, with its own bath that we didn’t use because there’s an onsen upstairs. Staff gave us a ride to the train station at the end. The train scenery is lovely, so I’d take it over a taxi to enjoy the views. Women with tattoos aren’t allowed in the public onsen, but private baths can be booked for 2200 ¥ an hour. They provide a Yokata, traditional indoor clothing with a kimono-like look. Everyone was friendly and seemed happy to have us. One person spoke fluent English; the others were fine communicating through Google Translate or gestures.

We booked the private onsen and loved it. It was spacious and clean, and even had some toys for children. The public bath was relaxing too, and the outdoor bath looked out over beautiful mountain ranges. Our honeymoon stay at Ryokan Nakamatsuya was memorable from the start. The reception was being renovated, and the staff kept apologizing for the inconvenience, which showed how much they cared about guests. Only one staff member spoke fluent English, but he made us feel very welcome and took time to explain each dish at our first kaiseki dinner. The rest of the team spoke limited English, yet were warm, attentive, and genuinely kind in every interaction. Ryokan Nakamatsuya brings together traditional Japanese charm and thoughtful service. We’re grateful for the care we received and would happily return. It’s a peaceful, authentic place, and we highly recommend it.

During my long trip in September, I stayed here and really enjoyed the mountain view from the room and the open-air onsen. It may not be the grandest ryokan around, but it felt welcoming and had what I was looking for. The staff were as impeccable as ever, and dinner with Matsutake courses and regional ingredients was a treat. Breakfast was just as amazing. I’ll remember this trip for a long time.

We spent two nights here and loved it. The staff made us feel very welcome, the food was delicious, and the scenery was beautiful. We had our own private onsen and enjoyed traditional Nagano delicacies. The open-air onsen is especially worth trying in snowy weather. My wife and I will remember this place for a long time, and we’ll come back whenever we visit Nagano. Much love, and thank you, Nakamatsuya!

The hospitality and the meals at the hotel really impressed me.
