Our family of four stayed as part of a camping trip where we could bring our own things. The tent was clean, though I wondered if the toilets hadn't been cleaned yet. The barbecue was included, but after four cups of rice and four bowls of yakisoba, we were all full! I was glad we could get a buffet breakfast in the main building.

There aren't any children's playgrounds, and they don't rent bicycles with training wheels. We went in mid-September and found lots of mosquitoes and ants, so come prepared. The free tent sites are spacious, and the toilets and cooking facilities are excellent.

I booked Kyukamura Unzen on a whim for a Friday overnight trip, since it was the cheapest place I found. With two meals, it cost under 10,000 yen per person, and the food was tasty and filling. The website described dinner as a half-buffet, but during our visit an elementary school karate camp was there, and the buffet part was just rice, miso soup, pickles, and dessert. It seemed like they brought out more food than usual, though. There was a wide choice of dishes, and since it was Setsubun they gave us ehomaki, which was nice. Breakfast was a delicious buffet, curry included.

The buffet suited me because I could choose whatever I wanted, and the quiet spot at the foot of Mount Unzen-Fugen was lovely. Still, having stayed at many Kyukamuras, I found this one a bit disappointing. It's a shame it's closing. This was my first and last visit to Unzen Kyukamura.

We had the Ise lobster course, with grilled blackthroat seaperch and other dishes. It was delicious, haha. If you're after a really quiet setting, I think this is a good choice.
