The rooftop has five open-air baths with lovely mountain and sea views, and each one was piping hot. You reserve a bath at the front desk in 50-minute slots, and can book more than once through the day as long as you’re considerate of others. I have tattoos, so I skipped the public bath, but these private baths worked well for me. The half-board meals were plentiful and delicious, and we never finished everything. They’re traditional Japanese kaiseki, so Western visitors should come with an open mind. There’s a Lawson next door for drinks and snacks, and the hotel also offers a drinks menu delivered to your room. The first-floor common area has free chilled green tea and hot coffee. This lovely ryokan sits on the main road by the sea in small Obama Onsen, among steaming inns with hills and trees behind them. The staff were friendly, thoughtful, and accommodating, and the clean, new-feeling rooms are spacious, comfortable, and all face the sea. Hot Foot, a free foot bath nearby, is a nice place to walk to and chat with locals and visitors. Getting here takes a train from Nagasaki and then about an hour on a public bus. It’s cash only, with no IC card, and you need to know your stop and press the button or the driver may not stop. I’ve stayed at many ryokans around Japan, and this was one of the best. We felt welcome throughout, and I hope to return to Obama Onsen. Before we left, the staff helped arrange a taxi to our next hotel and held our bags while we walked around town. When we came back, they’d even put the bags in the taxi for us. We didn’t have to lift a finger, and I’m very grateful for their kindness.

I’m vegetarian, and although I told them vegetables and rice would be fine, they made a real effort to accommodate me. A couple of dishes had bonito flakes, so I couldn’t eat those, but the value and care were still above and beyond. I got a nice rate for a Friday night, a free hour in the rooftop private bath overlooking the bay, and paid an extra 500 yen when booking to include breakfast.

I came for a day-use onsen. The water was great, the room felt comfortable, and there’s a lovely sea view through the hot bath window. The downside is that the bathing rooms are right next to each other, and sound carries enough to make it feel like your privacy is being invaded.

I only visited as a walk-in for the public bath, but the onsen was really, really good. The woman at reception was very kind and didn’t seem fazed by foreign visitors. The changing room was clean and roomy, with lockers and keys. They had one good hairdryer, two smaller ones, and free face products that I’d recommend. The showers had strong pressure, with free shampoo, conditioner, and body soap, plus a really nice grapefruit salt scrub. There are three indoor baths, one shallow and hot, one cold, and one regular hot bath, as well as an outdoor bath. It was a great onsen experience. We paid 1,000 yen each with no time limit. We brought our own towels, though there’s probably a rental charge.

We visited the private onsen, or kazokuburo, in winter and loved it. It’s on the roof, with a wide view of the water and mountains. Opening the curtains lets you see people soaking their feet in the long foot onsen by the water. Parking at the hotel is free. I believe the 60-minute bath cost the two of us 2,000 yen. A great experience!
