Unzen Shinyu

Our room had both tatami and beds, and it was really comfortable. The hotel is a classic onsen property that’s getting old, but it’s well maintained. Staff were friendly, service was good, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The bath and water were very good too. We could walk around the nearby geothermal sites, which was great.

We really enjoyed our stay. The room was comfortable, the food decent, and the onsen clean and comfortable. The staff went out of their way to help us, and one spoke English fluently, which is unusual in my experience at Japanese hotels. At check-in, I asked whether a ferry to Kumamoto accepted the Japanese national discount coupons. The staff called the ferry service and found out it didn’t. The next morning, they gave me a pamphlet for another ferry that did accept the coupons. Later, when we went out walking, a staff member by the door hurried over with a local map and pointed out where to go for the best geothermal views. I highly recommend the hotel.

Shinyu was a wonderful place for my wife and me. The family has run it for four generations, more than 100 years, and they really know how to make guests feel at home. Staff and service were exceptional, and some staff spoke fluent English, which made it easier to arrange things and get ideas for places to see. The location is beautiful, just a short walk from the geothermal vents. The cuisine was outstanding, fresh, and seasonal, and the baths were lovely for soaking. I don’t hesitate to give it five stars. Highly recommended!

The rooms were cozy and clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The hot springs were very good too. But the meals were the standout for me, super delicious and the best I’ve had at any ryokan I’ve visited. Definitely would come back!
