Ureshino Kanko Hotel Taishoya

Ureshino, a lovely small town in Saga prefecture, was a beautiful setting for a memorable stay. We enjoyed our time immensely. The service and hospitality were outstanding, and both kaiseki dinners and breakfast were spectacular. The male and female onsens were refined and immaculate, as was the outdoor one, reached by a short shuttle ride from the hotel. Thank you for such a wonderful visit.

Dining was a highlight, with exceptionally fresh fish, beautifully prepared dishes, and attentive, warm, professional restaurant service. The food was outstanding. Our room was clean and well kept, calm and cozy, with large, incredibly soft beds, like sleeping on a feather mattress. The hotel has a distinct retro feel, almost like elegant 80s Japan. It’s clearly not new, but it seems intentional rather than neglected, and each corner looks like a scene from an old movie. This ryokan has character, soul, and an atmosphere you won’t find in modern chain hotels. If you like places with history and excellent food, it’s special.

The food was great, and the staff were very caring and welcoming. But the onsen facilities are outdated despite having several options, and the spaces are limited. They felt small for the number of guests, so they were always super crowded. I was often waiting for a hair dryer too. Unless the facilities are renovated, I probably won’t return. I reserved a courtyard room but ended up in the one farthest to the side, with almost no courtyard. Not sure if that’s the downside of the early bird price : ( If the view matters to you, watch out.

The kaiseki dinner was wonderful, and we loved soaking in our private wooden bathtub with onsen water. We had an unforgettable stay. At arrival, we were disappointed to hear the pump at Shiiba Sanso was broken, but the staff were so lovely that we soon got over it. The reception staff speak good English, and the woman who checked us in made us feel welcome and at ease. We really loved our time here.
