The outdoor onsen setting is spectacular, and the spring feels like the real thing rather than piped hot tap water. Our Japanese-Western room was roomy and comfortable, with its own toilet, which many hotels catering to Japanese guests don't have. Dinner was delicious, and the price felt very reasonable. Be sure to book a room with meals, since there aren't other options nearby. We had a wonderful stay last week, and the drive there was easy and scenic.
We like the alkaline water and the rotemburo overlooking the mountain creek. Obokoso is a very remote Onsen ryokan off route 277 near Yakumo, so getting there takes real effort, yet it's often quite busy with day visitors. After visiting several times before, we stayed overnight on our way back from Hakodate. The irori dinner with local beef and seafood was delicious, though the exhaust wasn't very strong, so we had to wash off the smoke afterward.
The outdoor hot spring was beautiful and green, and dinner was delicious. The price made the trip worthwhile too.
The food was really tasty, and there was plenty of it. I loved the atmosphere of the outdoor bath with snow all around. Being far from any settlement is a plus for me, so this gets five stars. If you find a place you can only reach by car inconvenient, though, I wouldn't recommend it.
Set in a beautiful natural area at the foot of Mount Oboko, this hot spring has a river view from the room. The innkeeper and staff were all very welcoming. There are just an indoor bath and an outdoor bath, but the rocks give the baths a lovely feel. I enjoyed the meal too. Day-use bathing costs 500 yen.
