Cottage Morinokokage

The hosts were so kind and helpful, and the place has everything you could need. Out of all our stays during three months in Japan, this was probably our favorite. 5/5.

We were able to get a bento box from the nearby restaurant through the owner, which made things easy for our hiking day. He was really friendly and gave us a thorough walk-through of both the cottage and the property. The cottage itself was spacious and clean, with gorgeous views of the mou tian. It’s close to town and sits roughly in the middle of the island, if you can call it that. Most of the main hikes and attractions still take a 30-plus-minute drive, but Yakushima is small, so nothing felt too far away.

The owner kindly picked me up, which I hadn’t expected, and helped me rent a car. The cottages are lovely and have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The hosts are accommodating and happy to help with whatever you need. It’s close to the Anbō ferry port, and the owners speak English. Highly recommend.

The little cottage was well cared for and had plenty of room, with parking right outside. Since I wanted to cook with local produce on Yakushima, cottage-style lodging seemed like a good fit. There were all the cooking utensils we needed, plus clear directions for sorting the trash. They also offered laundry and dryer use for free, and even had a shoe dryer in the room. That kind of care really stood out, since other hotels might charge for it. On our last night the sky unexpectedly cleared, and seeing it full of stars felt magical. A lovely way to end the trip.
