The staff were warm and hospitable. They worked around my dinner schedule, chatted with me, and gave me useful tips. I hadn’t included meals in my plan, but they encouraged me to try dinner for 2,000 yen, and I’m glad I did. The meals were elegant and generous, with local specialties like flying fish and red snapper. I picked Kamome-so mainly for its location and price. It was one of the most convenient places for reaching Arakawa Trailhead for the Jomon-sugi hike, and they could have a lunch bag ready at the front desk very early in the morning. The budget price meant I expected an older building. I would have preferred a private bathroom and shower in the room instead of the shared bathroom and bath. It didn’t bother me much in the off-season, since I never crossed paths with other guests in the bathroom, bath, or dining room, but I can imagine it getting inconvenient in peak season. I didn’t include meals in my plan. The coin laundry is a bargain at 100 yen!

It’s an old-time ryokan, so don’t expect anything new, an English manual, or English-speaking staff. That’s part of the experience of staying in an old ryokan on Yakushima. The shared bathroom is Japanese style, like an onsen. The meal was nice, though not amazing, and the fried flying fish was delicious.

I only went for the onsen. It’s very basic, but great if you just want a hot bath with friends. Five of us were a squeeze.

This seems like a great base for hiking. If you’re heading out early, they can provide a packed breakfast or order you a lunch box. The coin washer and dryer were useful, and it was a plus to have a sink in the room. The facilities are a little old. For 2,000 yen, dinner included fried flying fish, sashimi, shrimp, and even seaweed in the miso soup. The food was good and better value than eating at a local restaurant. Free gas cylinders were provided outside, which helped. I’d accidentally brought mine here, even though gas cylinders aren’t allowed in the hotel, and ended up abandoning it.

The room was old, but at this price, with delicious food, that didn’t bother me. We stayed three nights and got different dishes each time. The building itself is old, and the bath water wasn’t very strong. Our room was on the third floor, and we had to go out to the balcony to use the toilet, though it did have a washlet.
