Super Hotel Yamagataeki Nishiguchi Natural Hot Springs

I chose this hotel despite its distance from the station because I wanted the public bath or onsen. It turned out to be closed for maintenance, with no notice on the booking site. That felt like cheating. If I’d known before booking, I’d have chosen a comparable hotel near the station without a bath. On top of that, they wouldn’t keep my luggage overnight even though I was checking in again the next day. I’ve never experienced that before. Very, very bad service.

The breakfast was outstanding, especially the gyudon and egg omelet. The hotel has had renovations, but still looks its age. Sound insulation was really poor, and every little noise from the neighbors kept me awake.

A strong pick for budget travelers who want a quality stay away from home. The chain is well located near rail stations, and almost all its hotels have a public bath or onsen. Some even include free breakfast. I find it the best value among its competitors, highly recommended.

I’ve liked the SUPER hotel brand and enjoyed many stays on past trips to Japan, but this one was an unforgettable experience for the wrong reason. The location was nice, and breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The women serving in the restaurant were all energetic and helpful about keeping tables clean and the food stocked. But the older man, perhaps around 60, who handled check-in at about 17:00 on the evening of Oct 6 was extremely unpleasant and arrogant. In dozens of stays in different Japanese cities, I’d never had service like it. It made me realize there are still some Japanese people who may not be friendly to foreigners. The owner of this branch should improve this employee’s training to protect service quality. I even feel uncomfortable sharing this experience in a review.
