At $360 a night, I expected at least the basics. The room was never cleaned and the bins weren't emptied. I'm happy to handle that myself, but not at that price. The hotel is old and dated, and smoke from the nearby smoking lounge drifted into the lobby lounge. It felt like an overpriced hostel with very little to offer compared with other options. I'm very disappointed, and the booking agent we contacted never replied.

The downstairs lounge was nice, and we were warmly welcomed at this old-style hotel. Its location is convenient, especially in a small place like Zao. The toilet was ensuite, but there was a mix-up in the booking about whether the showers were private or shared. The onsen hours alternate by gender, so couples can't bathe at the same time.

We only tried the Onsen, and it was great, though the hotel has plenty of other facilities. Our Japanese-style room was spacious and had a lovely view. Staff were friendly, and the check-in process and timing were flexible. Some staff speak English, while others don't. You can walk to the bus stop, but watch your footing because the road may be snowy and slippery.

I was really glad I got to visit and stay here. The Japanese staff member who speaks English was especially kind and friendly. I loved the stay and would definitely return!
