The bed was softer than I like, and the room could use better soundproofing, but this is a superb spot for a Zao ski trip. It's ski-in, ski-out, with lift 26 right outside the lodge, plus a rental shop on site, discounted lift tickets and rental packages, and free shuttle pickup. The indoor and outdoor onsens are a great treat after skiing. Dinner and breakfast are complimentary and were amazing. I couldn't have asked for more from the location or the dining.
The facilities were clean, though the bathing area felt a little cramped. I visited for the day and found both indoor and outdoor baths beyond the changing room. The water is natural Zao acid sulfur spring water, used without circulation.
Skiing straight from the hotel, then taking in that magical view with hotpot and a hot spring. The location is hard to beat. What else could you ask for?
The building looks worn and dated, so it could use a refresh. Still, having two kinds of onsen and being able to ski directly to and from the hotel is pretty amazing. That alone would bring me back.
I brought my family here yesterday and was met with a bad attitude. The staff seemed not to like having foreign tourists around. If you're visiting from abroad, I wouldn't book this hotel.
