We got stranded in a snowstorm, and Shigakogen Yokote Yamamotoso came to our rescue. The staff picked us up, helped with the snow chains, and drove us safely down the mountain. They were incredibly kind and helpful, and made a stressful situation into a stay we’ll remember. I’m deeply grateful.

I came back after about 30 years, this time to ski at Kumanoyu, Yokoteyama, and Shibutoge Pass. I remembered the special nabeyaki udon at Yamamotoso and went there for lunch. It was delicious, and the restaurant slippers made it easy to relax.

It has the feel of an old-fashioned inn. The building is showing its age, but it was cleaned properly, so that wasn’t a problem. The meals were just right, with nothing missing or overdone. I caused them trouble with an issue, and I was grateful for how they handled it.

The stars were beautiful, and the place had a real home-from-home feel. With the slope right outside, I could ski and then rest in my room. It was nice having a toilet in the room, and the cleaning staff stayed out, which gave me privacy. The meals changed for consecutive-night stays so they didn’t overlap. I only wish the main course had been served warm. Even during Golden Week, it felt a little cold.
