We stayed two nights in March. This hostel is very close to the station, and staff were kind. Check-in was easy. The basic rooms were fine, with a small cupboard for hanging clothes, and heaters to keep us warm. The futons were surprisingly comfortable and the bedding cozy, though the pillows were very thin. The toilets and shower room were clean, warm, and restocked. One frustrating detail: there was no mirror above the sink by the women's toilets, which made washing my hands and putting in my contact lenses difficult. The hostel is handy for a night or two if you're going to see the snow monkeys. We walked all the way there to beat the crowds, since the buses only start running after the park opens. There are a few restaurants and bars nearby.

The location is ideal for exploring town and the nearby temple, and the bus station is just an eight-minute walk away. Zen hostel is great value for the accommodation, and I'd book again if we return. The owner was incredibly kind and helpful. The rooms were fine, and the included kerosene heaters kept them toasty even during our winter stay. The walls are thin, so noise depends entirely on the other guests. Everyone observed quiet hours while we were there. If you're over 6 ft (162 cm), watch your head around the low doorways.

It felt like the place had seen better days. There were watermarks where they shouldn’t have been, and the sink wasn’t working. I didn’t feel comfortable staying there, and for the price it just wasn’t worth it.

The caretaker made the stay feel special. He was professional, helpful with all my questions, spoke English, and made sure I was comfortable. The inn itself is an older house, so it doesn’t have the modern amenities you’d expect at a standard hotel. Still, it was a great base for a few days, close to the mountains for outdoor activities and near town shops and restaurants.
