Central Hotel Yokosuka

The location is great and the employees are friendly, but in my 10 years living in Japan this is easily the worst hotel I've stayed at. When I booked by phone, they told me 14,000 per night. At checkout I was charged 20,000 a night for the room, with no extra charges. I'm pretty sure they charge foreigners more than Japanese guests, whether resident or not, or they just lie about the prices. At 20,000 a night, you can get a very nice hotel elsewhere in Japan. Here, there were roaches, bloodstains on the pillow, mold on the vents, and a tiny room with no air conditioning or heat. The bathroom looked like it was from the 1970s. The coin laundry was expensive and still took four cycles to dry my clothes. They also give you a giant room key that you have to hand in whenever you leave, then collect again at the front desk when you return. You'd be better off sleeping in an internet cafe.

The location is hard to beat, and the staff were very kind. One employee seemed to be in training, but she checked us in really well and was so pleasant. Our room was clean and the bed comfortable. We stayed one night and had breakfast the next morning. The hotel itself looked quite nice, as though it had been maintained well as an event space. The rooms, though, were a little lackluster and could use some cosmetic upkeep. For the price it was fine, and I'd stay again if I were in the area.

The hotel is in a prime spot for Yokosuka activities, and the rooms were nice. The beds are on the firm side, though. I was surprised by how well the staff spoke English, especially the day staff. The younger gentleman with glasses was the most fluent. My one star deduction is for having to leave the key at the desk every time I went out, then pick it up again when I returned. This was my first stay here.

For the whole month, the cheaper rooms are marked as “excluded,” not fully booked, so we're forced to reserve the next available room at nearly twice the price. The more expensive room isn't twice as good, either. It's a poor business tactic and makes for a bad customer experience. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.
