For a budget trip to Yurigahama beach phantom island, this guesthouse is a practical, inexpensive choice, especially if you don’t have a rental car and plan to catch the ferry the next day. The owner picked me up at the port, which helped offset the room’s condition. Walking from the port takes about 1-1.5 hours. The location works well for visiting Yurigahama if you do have a car, as I did. Just be prepared for the lack of restaurants after sunset outside the downtown area, about an hour’s walk away. It’s a good idea to get cup noodles or something at the grocery store next door. The place is old and won’t suit everyone, especially people who only travel in luxury. I didn’t notice the bad smell some other reviewers mentioned. It just looks old, and maybe that smell was imagined. For the low price, I liked having my own room, privacy, and a sink, without having to socialize with other guests. I’d still choose it over a new hostel at this price. The owner was extremely honest: I booked two nights but left after one because of an unexpected rainstorm and an early business trip back to Tokyo. They charged me for one night and refused payment for the second. I think the affordable price comes from an owner who isn’t greedy or focused on business, and hasn’t invested in a luxury remodel. I’d stay again solo or with friends who are open to backpacking.

The owner picked me up and was really nice and accommodating. My room was small and cozy, but very clean. It’s a great place to relax.

The room is very basic, but it’s cheap for the islands in southern Japan. The owner is amazing.

An old, historic-feeling budget hotel, but perfectly acceptable.

The host is kind, and although it’s a fair way from downtown, I didn’t find that inconvenient. A supermarket nearby makes it easy to manage without paying for meals. The old facilities have a lived-in feel, with thank-you notes and messages from students and tourists who stayed for training camps covering the hallway walls. The Japanese-style rooms have a TV, Wi-Fi, and a sink area. Toilets and baths are shared. The Western-style toilet was clean, though there’s no washlet. The bath isn’t filled with hot water, but there are plenty of showers, which seems well suited to a training camp. Laundry costs 200 yen per wash, and detergent isn’t provided. There’s no dryer in the building, but the host was right that hanging clothes in the room with the air-conditioned section running dries them overnight. A clothesline and clothespins are provided. There’s also a coin laundry a little farther away if you want to use a dryer. There’s no limit on towels, just put used ones in the laundry basket. Shared extras include a fridge, microwave, oven, hot water, and free tea and snacks.
