Yufuin Hot Spring Fukinoya

The receptionist was friendly and explained the services one by one at check-in. My room was comfortable, and I was generally satisfied with the service included in my breakfast package. It's less than 1km from the bus station terminal, and I enjoyed the scenery along the way.

The location is quite a trek from the train station, though the walk is enjoyable. Once you're checked in, you can take a quicker route along the river to the town's main strip, and that's a lovely walk too. Our room was spacious, and all the staff were welcoming and friendly. We chose a private room with our own onsen, which was fantastic: hot, clean, and very private. It was our first and only onsen experience, so I can't compare it with others. We had half board, and most of the food was fantastic.

I came all the way from Beppu hoping to use the onsen as a walk-in guest, and it was such a disappointment. The website didn't say that reservations were needed or that an onsen-only visit wasn't possible. No one was at reception, and staff, I think, walked past without seeming to care why I was there. The hotel was dark, the entrance was open, and there was no notice saying the reception was closed or when anyone would return. An older woman eventually came out and told me I could only use the onsen if I stayed overnight. That was a real pity. I hope they update the information for future visitors.

The hillside setting among homes is a short drive from town, with lovely sunset views of Mt. Yufu. We didn't eat here, so I can only speak to the room. We had one with several beds upstairs as well as a few futons. If we'd realized how many people it could sleep, we wouldn't have booked two rooms for our other family members. It was a very reasonable price for the number of guests who could stay in one room. Unit 101 has a lovely private outdoor onsen with great views. The parking lot is small, and one downside was that smoking is allowed. One of the tatami rooms smelled strongly of an ashtray. I'd stay again. Also, drive up to the Sagiridai overpass for a great city view, especially in fog.
