Kijani Hotel

I walked from Lamu to Shela in the spirit of adventure and came across this place. The mural caught my eye, and I really liked the atmosphere at the rooftop restaurant. The space is very thoughtfully put together, and the gardener deserves a bonus.

The staff are a real highlight. They're warm, attentive, and caring, ready to help with arrangements or recommendations, or just have a friendly chat. Service feels personal. I also enjoyed the fresh, well-prepared meals, especially with a water view, and the pool and common areas are good places to unwind. The amenities are simple, which suits the island lifestyle. Kijani Hotel sits right at the water's edge in Shela, with lovely views of the channel, passing dhows, and memorable sunrises and sunsets. It's close enough to explore the village but still feels private. The rooms are airy and spacious, with Swahili-inspired design, high ceilings, balconies, and ocean-facing spaces that make them comfortable in the coastal heat. The hotel has a peaceful, authentic island feel, more like a quiet coastal home than a conventional hotel. A memorable Lamu stay for anyone looking for peace and understated elegance, and one that left me refreshed and wanting to return.

The food is delicious, especially the unforgettable curries, and the cozy terrace feels like home. At Kinjani, beauty, comfort, and attentive service all come naturally. Elisabeth, the manager, has a way of getting things done without fuss, and the staff are genuinely kind. The place captures Lamu's spirit with light breezes, Swahili furniture, and a small number of carefully arranged rooms. It's a little bubble of quiet elegance where everything seems to settle into place. And if you're a bit too Western to surrender to island time, the team picks up on that and gently suggests ordering ahead, so waiting stays part of the pleasure instead of turning frustrating.

We weren't staying at the property, but my husband and I stopped for breakfast at Kijani Hotel's Rooftop Restaurant while visiting Lamu. The waterfront view was incredible. We liked the coffee and the breakfast menu had a good range: fresh fruit plates, smoothies, and familiar choices like pancakes, waffles, and omelets. The staff were friendly and courteous, and the service was timely. Our server saw how sweaty I was and brought me a fan without being asked. So considerate. I'd highly recommend breakfast here.
