Women, please be careful about booking the mixed dorm. I arrived in the middle of the night, having booked a bed there, and was told by the owner or staff that I couldn’t stay because two men in the dorm weren’t comfortable sharing it with a woman. I’d just arrived in the country, had no SIM card, and didn’t know where else to go. They made no effort to help me find somewhere and said it wasn’t their problem, then sent me away in the middle of the night. It was the most uncomfortable experience I’ve had as a woman. I don’t want anyone else to be left in that position.

We had no power all evening, so there were no lights, the shower was cold, and we couldn’t charge our phones. It was also terribly hot under the corrugated metal roofs, around 30 degrees at midnight. There wasn’t a real window in our room, only a small opening near the floor, so airing it out wasn’t possible. The room had mouse droppings on the sheets and mold on the walls, and the bathroom was dirty too. Check-in took so long that we had to keep our very heavy bags on our backs the whole time. We spent one night there and wouldn’t recommend it if you want a decent night’s sleep.
