I loved this museum. It begins with an amazing 1000 Buddha gallery, a huge collection of Buddhas dating back to the 12th century. The displays range from tiny figures to large standing Buddhas, and the room feels calm and meditative, with respectful visitors taking in the art. After that, the exhibits move through Khmer history, art, culture, and religion in chronological order. There are special pieces and lots of clear historical explanation. We finished with a delicious iced chocolate at the little coffee shop, then wandered through the small but packed garden outside, full of tropical plants and succulents. This was one of the best museums I’ve visited, and I’d highly recommend it.

Before visiting the temples at Angkor Archaeological Park, I’d make the Angkor National Museum the first stop. It gives useful background on the region, from the rise of the Khmer Empire to the cultural, religious, and political forces that shaped it. The exhibits explain Hindu and Buddhist influences, temple symbolism, and how architectural styles changed across different periods. They’re clearly arranged and easy to follow, so the complex history never feels overwhelming. With that context, you can ask your guide better questions and see the temples with more understanding and appreciation. It adds a lot to the whole Angkor experience.

The museum is a great complement to visiting the temples, giving helpful context for the Angkor experience. Its exhibitions are divided into clear sections that explain the history, symbolism, and cultural importance of the monuments. The beautifully preserved artifacts are a highlight. Seeing the intricate carvings up close is breathtaking and gives you a real appreciation for the craftsmanship. The skill and artistry are unbelievable. It’s a fascinating, well-organized look at the temples of Angkor.

The English information is detailed and fascinating, and many of the displayed pieces are more than ONE THOUSAND years old. The building is massive, yet designed cleverly to take you through the museum in chronological order. I’ve visited many museums across Europe and S.E.A, and this is one of the best laid out I’ve seen. The Angkor National Museum is culturally, historically, and nationally important. I’d make it one of the first places to visit in Siem Reap, even before Angkor Wat, to get a sense of the ancient Khmer Empire’s history.

The exhibits were laid out really well, and there was so much history to take in, along with plenty of information and interactive screens. We were surprised by how big the museum was. A great place to learn about earlier periods of the Khmer empire if you're in siem reap.
