The Mekong views from the large balconies are lovely, and the rooms feel spacious, with roomy bathrooms and a cool breeze. It’s also a peaceful spot, handy for birdwatching, boat trips, kayaks, and the flooded forests. The food we tried was nice, though a lot of menu options weren’t available. The tour was a real letdown. I’d booked a guided boat and kayak trip to Koh Han, but the guide didn’t speak English or provide any guiding, and there was no promised briefing. We never went to Koh Han, and nobody told us during the trip. A ranger was added at the last minute, leaving too few kayaks, and we got back an hour early. I’d book through another local provider or go directly to the Community-Based Ecotourism sites instead. Service was also poor for the relatively high price. There was no proper check-in, and staff seemed surprised or confused by basic requests. Getting coffee, ordering food, and settling the bill at checkout all took a long time. No one working on site spoke English. I know some Khmer, but even then it was hard to sort out simple things. I’d booked and spoken with the owner on Telegram, and they were helpful, but weren’t there in person. There’s no drinking water refill, just single-use plastic bottles. For a place that calls itself an ecoresort, I hope they’ll change this. Even much more basic guesthouses I’ve stayed at around Cambodia provide water from big blue bottles. Wifi didn’t work in the rooms either, only in the restaurant. I expected something rustic given the remote setting, but much better service for what we paid. The resort has a beautiful setup and could be a fantastic place with some improvements. I hope they make them for future guests.

This riverside stay has wooden cabins and an open-air restaurant on the east bank, with kayaks to rent and boat trips to Koh Han and other flooded islands. In the dry season, the Ramsar site between Stung Treng and the Khone Falls on the Laos border attracts plenty of birds.

We had to leave in the middle of the night with our young kids. While we were trying to get out, the staff barely helped, didn’t apologize, and insisted we pay in full, including for the breakfast we’d paid extra for, even though we weren’t staying the night. It started badly too. The resort had several empty bungalows, and I think we were the only guests. There was no formal check-in and nowhere to pay by credit card. In our room, half the ceiling was covered with cloth, and the sheets were a bit dirty. At bedtime we found huge spiders, centipedes, slugs, and lizards in the bathroom and corners of the room. We spotted two frogs while sitting on the bed and called the caretaker to remove them. At the same time, there was a huge centipede on the bed. As we were trying to decide whether to move hotels, another frog dropped from the cloth ceiling cover. That was the last straw, so we left straight away to find somewhere else. We’ve stayed at jungle resorts in Bali, Kenya, Brazil, Langkawi, and other tropical places, and none were as poorly maintained as this one. It’s one of the worst hotels or resorts I’ve ever stayed in.

The hosts were very pleasant and seemed to have a good feel for the place. The individual bungalows have hot water and air conditioning, and it’s a lovely spot by the river. There are insects in the rooms, which comes with being in the jungle. Go with an open mind and you’ll be very pleased.

Having a boat, kayaks, and a Khmer boat for trips to the other islands was the best part. The room was spacious and looked out over the river, with a big table for dinner. The room price seemed okay, but the food felt pricey and was a bit salty. With a few small improvements to the decor and hygiene, this could be a much better resort.
