The jungle garden is incredible. Raymond Jungles, the renowned landscape architect, did it, and I spent an hour each day walking the cobblestone paths. I was glad to explore new sections marked “guests only.” The staff were consistently helpful and friendly, and the food was terrific. My omelettes were perfect each morning, and last night’s mahi-mahi was among the best I’ve had, which says a lot for Nevis. The one letdown was that they couldn’t get any lobster all week. We’ve been coming to Nevis for 30 years and owned a house at Cliffdwellers for 15 of those, our favorite spot on the island. Our usual tradition was lunch the day after arriving at Golden Rock, our second favorite place, for a lobster salad sandwich. We had to sell our house, so this time we stayed at the Sugar Mill. It exceeded our expectations in every way. Brice and Helen bought it about 20 years ago and really took things up a notch. The mill looks newly renovated, though it’s actually just been repainted, and everything is in good shape. The stairs to the second floor were a bit much for us in our 70s, so we slept downstairs.

We chose this lovely hotel and restaurant for our 30th wedding anniversary dinner, and it was just right. The romantic setting, delicious food, and wonderful service from our server made the evening feel special.

The serene grounds are really lovely, with cabins around the property of this former sugar plantation. A shop owner recommended the restaurant, and we arrived before lunchtime without a reservation. Once it opened, we waited a while. It seems you really need to book, since hotel guests come first.

The setting is beautiful, and the establishment has a great atmosphere for lunch. The food, unfortunately, didn’t measure up. All three dishes were bland and very mediocre. The breaded chicken was tough and poorly cooked, with the coating falling right off what looked like a previously frozen breast. The mahi-mahi and burger also seemed like fast food kitchen quality.

A private swimming pool, delicious food, and exceptionally courteous management staff. The plants are an amazing collection, beautifully displayed, and the peaceful landscape earns five stars. This is a place for quiet and rest for your soul, rather than a beach getaway. The beach is quite a drive away.
