Bukchonmaru Hanok Guesthouse

The steep hill is the main drawback here. Walking up from the subway with large suitcases would be hard, and it may be difficult for anyone with walking problems. Once there, though, the location is handy for Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung and Bukchon Hanok Village, with a bus stop right outside. We stayed two nights in this small hanok, run by a cheerful, hospitable elderly couple. Our younger daughter loved it and wished we could stay longer. The family room for four had just enough floor space for our luggage beside the beds. The floor beds and extra-comfy duvets were lovely to sleep on, and the room was cozy with air conditioning. There was enough room to hang clothes, but the toilet was cramped and offered too few hooks for clothes and towels. The hosts helped us find nearby places and understand local transport, then called a taxi to Seoul Station. We were worried the driver might refuse four passengers with one large suitcase, three cabin bags and our daypacks, but the landlady kindly explained it to him and he fit everything in. She also made a delicious traditional Korean breakfast. Since we had an early train, she packed kimbap for us with cool bottled water, chopsticks and napkins. So thoughtful.

The owner couple were lovely, helping us find our way and serving a tasty wonton soup for breakfast. We found the room cute and homey. Some rooms share a bathroom, but it was kept very clean. The hanok sits at the top of a hill, across from a small bus stop, and the walk to the subway takes more than ten minutes.

We really enjoyed staying here. The room was tiny but cozy, with a futon on a heated floor, and the atmosphere was lovely. The host was very friendly and the location worked well. They served a very nice homemade Korean breakfast in the room or at an outdoor table. Coffee, tea and water were free.

The owners were generous and genuinely cared about making guests comfortable in both the property and Korea. They were attentive while still giving us privacy. Every morning, the owner made homemade Korean food. During my stay, that included vegetable pancakes, mandoo, kimchi, congee, porridge and coffee. A great choice for families, couples or solo travelers wanting a unique traditional Hanok stay in Hanok Village. Highly recommend.
