Philstay Myeongdong Metro

The cabin was clean and comfortable, even though the room itself was pretty small. It had all the facilities I needed. This is the best hostel in the myeongdong area, close to myeongdong station exit 9. I’ll be back soon.

Back in 2015, I had a wonderful stay at Central Economy Myeongdong, but it wasn’t available when I returned to Seoul in 2023. That time, the Hong Kong receptionist spoke fluent English and was friendly and helpful. We got free breakfast each morning until 10 AM and could use the self-service laundry. I was traveling with my parents this time, and because it was high season, we had to stay separately. They chose Philstay Myeongdong. The price was much higher, but I was shocked by the service: there was no breakfast or free laundry, and I wasn’t even allowed to visit just to pick them up. They struggle with English and can’t read Hangul, so I wanted to help them get around. Each time I went to collect them, we felt hurried out, even though we hadn’t used any facilities or asked for water. The owner and receptionist did speak English fluently, which made communication easier. The location was convenient, but the lack of hospitality was disappointing after my earlier stay.

It wasn’t worth the price for me. I could have booked an Airbnb instead. The room was small for what I paid, and the windows couldn’t be opened. For a four-night booking, I was only allowed to do laundry once before extra charges applied. They also supplied only a hand towel, as shown in the photo. The location near the big Olive Young store was perhaps the one plus. I wouldn’t recommend it. I booked an Airbnb for my other nights near line 4 or line 2, and that was worth it.

This is a little gem for backpackers who want a quiet, cheap stay with all the basic amenities. It’s hard to beat at that price. There’s an 11 pm noise rule, so it won’t suit you if you want to party late or get rowdy. It’s set up for solo travelers looking for an easy, inexpensive place. Finding the hotel and working out how to enter can be tricky. I took photos of the street, building, and Philstay entrance. Take the elevator to level 5.
