The Club Lounge was the best part of my recent stay at InterContinental Almaty. Service there was great, the staff were friendly, and it was handy for breakfast and evening snacks. The room was clean and nice, but smaller and more basic than I expected at this level. Communication with staff over WhatsApp worked perfectly once I’d checked in, and they were responsive and helpful. It’s odd that the feature only becomes available after check-in. I’d like IHG to offer pre-arrival messaging like Hilton and Bonvoy. A few things fell short. The hotel advertises two free laundry pieces per day, but staff denied that benefit when I asked. I’m a Royal Ambassador and Diamond Elite member, and was surprised not to get an upgrade. The property feels old and could use renovation, especially next to other InterContinentals. The pillows were small and hard; I asked for larger ones, but none arrived. The thermostat stayed around 21°C even though staff said it could go down to 18°C, so sleeping was uncomfortable. The staff were kind and professional, especially in the Lounge, but the building’s condition and some management policies were below what I expected. IHG needs to update the property and its communication tools to keep up with Almaty’s competitors.

The one thing I’d change is having someone greet guests and help with their bags when they arrive. Otherwise, we had an excellent stay. The hotel is a little old, as others have mentioned, but everything worked for us. Reception service was excellent, and we really enjoyed the breakfast and the food and drinks in the lounge.

The breakfast was outstanding, easily one of the best I’ve had at a hotel. Staff were friendly, polite, and helpful, which made a big difference. The rooms are a little dated but still feel luxurious and comfortable. The spa was sufficient, and while the massage was expensive, I still found it very enjoyable and relaxing.

Almaty traffic makes the central location a real advantage, especially since some other high-end hotels are outside the center and can be inconvenient. I’ve stayed at Intercontinental properties in several countries, and this is one of the best. The hotel is well built, with excellent soundproofing, solid, attractive furniture, and a thoughtful layout. My room was spotless, and housekeeping did a great job, with nice touches and amenities. Everyone I dealt with was kind and responsive. Breakfast was a magnificent spread with Western and local choices, and I especially liked the chicken yoghurt soup. A real gem, highly recommended for business and luxury travelers.

The location here is great, it’s much quieter than the Ritz Carlton, and the layout feels like a normal hotel. At the Ritz, the lobby is on the 30th floor and you have to take a separate elevator back down to lower-floor rooms. That setup feels like a prison, and the Ritz is in a terrible location, despite its fantastic staff and some of the best service I’ve experienced. The Intercontinental is super well located, but the rooms are mediocre and shabby, the breakfast is only decent, and the service is bad. No one helped with our bags or even held the door while we struggled to get them out. There was no service at breakfast, no welcome for super elite status guests, and no upgrades. It was simply a very disappointing stay.
