Shymkent Grand Hotel

The location is right in the center, and the staff were professional. Breakfast was good, and the standard room was clean, though a bit smaller than I expected.

The security was the worst part. My door was locked, but it had no bolt or chain, and a man actually walked into my room while I was naked and wet after a shower. I’ve stayed in more than 40 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, including small regional towns. I don’t expect the same standards everywhere, but this was one of the worst hotels I’ve encountered. The room itself felt poorly planned: it was tiny, with a small wardrobe, just two hangers, one drawer, and only one reachable power outlet. There were no bathroom shelves for toiletries. The so-called balcony was an enclosed, hot, uncomfortable space with the air-conditioning outlet, seemingly useful only for smoking. There was even a kettle on a special shelf, but its cord couldn’t reach the plug. Breakfast was below average. I can’t remember the last hotel I stayed at that only offered instant coffee. The place is old and worn, and there’s nothing grand about it. At best I’d call it three stars, more like two. Check-in started badly too: one receptionist was dealing with over ten people waiting, while three security staff stood chatting in the lobby.

The bathroom looks new, and the bedroom is spacious. The hotel is close enough to walk to the plaza, which is great, though you can hear road noise from the balconies. Breakfast is included and has a good variety. The staff were helpful and accommodating.
