Mekong Sunset Guesthouse

It’s right by the river, and the location works well if you want a quiet room while still being able to walk to the centre, about two minutes away. My room was on the small side but had enough space. Cleanliness was acceptable, and the amenities covered what I needed. They also provide free water, instant coffee, and tea.

The room was dirty, the lights were broken, and there was no electricity. The towels weren’t clean, and after they did our laundry, the clothes still came back dirty. They also tried to rent us a scooter from Khamsey, a company that scams customers, and seemed reluctant to tell us the company’s name. They show a low price online, then charge more using their own currency exchange and say the price is only in US dollars. They wouldn’t let us check out an hour late either. I don’t get why they try to cheat foreigners. If they were trustworthy, they’d get a lot of business.

The room was unlivable. Power was out as soon as I checked in, some lights were broken, and there was garbage and dust under the bed. Mosquitoes were everywhere, I was killing one about every minute. The toilet was dark and smelled like a sewer. We’d booked a double bed but got a bunk bed, in the room on the left of the reception desk. I can’t believe they rented it out. We handed over our laundry bag at check-in, then decided soon after to leave. The employee refused to return the laundry until we paid for a full day, basically holding it hostage. This was the worst place I’ve stayed in my life, and I’ve been to dozens of hostels and guest houses. Given the room and the employee’s attitude, I’d tell anyone considering this place to stay away.

It feels like home here, and the owner is very friendly to guests. A relaxing place. See you next time. Happy New Year 2023 🎊
