The Mekong Sunset View Restaurant has a menu featuring Lao cuisine, but the riverfront setting is what really makes it special. The Mekong and surrounding landscape open out in wide, unobstructed views. At sunset, the water becomes a golden, shimmering ribbon beneath the vivid colors in the sky. Distant mountains add depth to the scene, making a memorable backdrop for dinner.

We’ve eaten here twice and left happy with both the food and atmosphere each time. It’s in a good spot along the Mekong River. The long waits are the downside: I understand waiting for food, but having to wait 15 minutes for a drink we ordered was frustrating. I recommend the restaurant, just be prepared for a longer wait after ordering.

We had four hours to fill before our train back to Vientiane, and the menu outside caught my eye, so we gave the place a try. The WiFi was surprisingly good. Internet connections are poor across much of Laos, but I was able to get some blogging and work done here. The food was spot on: we ordered glass noodle stir-fry with beef, beef fried rolls, and French fries, all cooked perfectly. It’s also one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon, having a cold Beer Lao beside the lovely Mekong River view. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely view over the river, and the menu had plenty to choose from with generous portions. The food was delicious, especially the sweet and sour fish. One of my daughters is picky about meat quality, but she thoroughly enjoyed the chicken and broccoli, so it must have been amazing. A great pick for our last lunch in Luang Prabang.
