As a woman travelling alone, I felt very safe at Pongkham. The owners looked after what I needed, and the simple breakfast of eggs and bread gave me enough energy to explore. I tried a boutique hotel closer to the Main Tourist Street afterward, where the location was perfect for tourists, but I'll definitely return to Pongkham. Next time I hope to have a cruising bike for ladies with a basket, so I don't struggle getting on and off a mountain bike for young men. It's a small LAO FAMILY run hotel in a residential area outside the main tourist area, quiet both day and night. There are a few hotels nearby, including Sofitel. The daily price is reasonable, and with a bicycle I can reach the Morning Market in 10 minutes. A 15-minute walk or five minutes by bike gets me to Phongsavanh Bank for money exchange at a very good rate, Rabirory, a nice little coffee shop, and a small shop with local meals for 40,000 kips, less than US$2. There's also a small fruit market. The room is basic but clean, the AC works well, and the shower water is hot. The towels aren't soft and silky, but they exfoliate well, which I don't mind.

The room was clean, but the place felt overpriced for what it offered. The beds and pillows were hard as a rock, which I guess is common in Asia. It's quite far from the city centre, about 25 minutes on foot, so you'd need a bicycle or tuk tuk to get there.

Run by a lovely family, this homestay was peaceful and very clean. It’s away from the busy centre, with a real feel of Lao hospitality. Highly recommend.

What made this hotel special for us was the people running it. They were some of the kindest we met in Laos. We booked directly by email, and they helped arrange a scooter at a fair price. Having a tuk tuk on site was useful for trips to and from the train station, too. The hotel is a little outside town, which we liked, and free bikes got us to the centre in about five minutes. Breakfast was a lovely start to the day: fresh eggs, good bread, homemade jam and fruit.

We had a really nice time here, chatting with the owners and other guests. The place is quiet, the room was spotless and the bed was comfortable. It’s a little beyond the town centre, but free, good-quality bikes made getting into town quick. The owners were wonderful, full of useful advice and happy to help us save money where they could. Breakfast was very good, with fresh fruit each day and an omelette cooked in front of you. You can ask for something else if you prefer. There’s also a swimming pool nearby that’s very cheap.
