We paid for the room in cash at Penny’s Restaurant, but about a week later my credit card was charged too. The card had been provided to guarantee the booking, and the charge was made by Riverview Bungalows & GH. We’d booked a Double Bungalow for one night, with payment due at the property. When we arrived, the owner wasn’t there, so we contacted him on WhatsApp using the number from Booking.com. He arrived a few minutes later, showed us the bungalow, asked whether we had towels, and said payment should be made at Penny’s, the restaurant he runs with his wife, Penny. We went there after meeting our guide for an upcoming tour. Penny handled the payment and talked about breakfast and our tour plans. We ate dinner at Gecko Restaurant, checked out the next day by leaving the key in the bungalow, then had breakfast at Gecko before our tour. After returning to Muang Ngoy, we left the village that same day for Luang Prabang. When I challenged the owner about the duplicate charge, he said he remembered it differently, that we hadn’t paid cash and had only paid for food. We hadn’t eaten at his restaurant, and he hadn’t handled the payment himself. On WhatsApp he kept giving other excuses that weren’t true. I wouldn’t recommend staying here. Avoid it.

The breakfast was a hassle every morning. We’d told the owner we were vegan to ask what might be available, and she offered vegan pancakes, but we had to chase them more than once each day. It gave us the impression they didn’t really want to make them. On our last night we ran out of toilet paper, and when I asked for a roll, she looked disgusted and said she’d bring one later. She never did. We stayed four nights, first booking three and then adding one more. After the second day, I booked the extra night through Booking because it was much cheaper than the price she’d quoted earlier, and she hadn’t offered us a deal. When I told her, she yelled and asked why I hadn’t spoken to her first. Most people would pick the cheaper option. I also got a bad impression when we first met her at the pier. She seemed to be waiting for another guest too and muttered something like, “Where is this stupid guy?” Read the negative reviews before booking. They’re accurate.

The room was plain and a little musty, but it worked fine for a few nights with our sleeping bags. The river view was lovely, and the owners were friendly. They have different rooms around the village. I imagine simple rooms like ours are fairly typical of a small village like this.

The private balcony was the highlight, with a hammock and an amazing river view. The room and bathroom were comfortable, clean, and in good shape. The owner was really nice too, and his restaurant does good cappuccino and bread sandwiches. I’d definitely recommend a kayak trip to the small village about 40 minutes north.

Gabriel and Penny were lovely, and they can arrange kayaks, bicycles, motorbikes, and laundry. Their restaurant, Pennys Place, also makes homemade baked baguettes that were so delicious. The bungalows were sweet and clean, with a great location and views. And the bed was the comfiest I’ve slept in anywhere in Southeast Asia so far. We had such a good time in this beautiful little village and would happily stay again.
