Big cans of beer for 700, a free billiard table that’s been fully renovated, and fast, stable internet. I could work or stream with no problems. The owner even lets you put your own music on the speakers, which makes the place feel relaxed and easygoing. The pool has a beautiful view over the water, especially at sunset. After dark, the lit palm tree and cozy seating area make it a great spot for beers, talking, or just doing nothing. The setting is calm, green and tropical, but still social, with the option to party if that’s what you’re after. There’s a shortcut across a small river that gets you to the water in three or four minutes at most. The rooms are very clean, the beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms are impressively clean too. You can tell the place is constantly looked after. From the moment you arrive, the owner is relaxed, incredibly nice, and genuinely cares that people have a good time. It feels like you’re hanging out somewhere well-run, not just staying as a guest. Honestly, I can’t think of a thing to complain about. The price for what you get is incredible, and this is easily the best hostel I stayed at in Sri Lanka. If you’re in the area, I’d recommend it 100 percent and would come back anytime.

The location is the only good thing about this place. I booked a female dorm and was given a bed with sheets dirty from the previous guest. The floors, showers and toilets weren’t cleaned and were disgusting. Some people had been living there for a long time, which seemed to be part of why the place was in such a state. The lockers weren’t working, and people who weren’t staying in our room kept coming and going as if they could use the space because they were “living” there. They left their belongings around and used the only lockers that worked. It was a really negative experience, and I wouldn’t stay again. I don’t understand the good reviews, unless they’re from people who stay for longer periods.

A very social hostel in a great spot, close to the beach and really good surf breaks. The staff are all so sweet, and the prices are more than fair. Best hostel in Midigama!

We’d booked a few days ahead and paid a deposit, but when we arrived, they told us the place was overbooked. The owner refunded the deposit and tried to find somewhere else for us, but in the end we had to find a place ourselves at the last minute. Really disappointing.

Just what I wanted: a relaxing stay, a nice pool, and an ocean view. The surf is a short walk away across the train tracks. Asanka and his family are super friendly.
