Villa Lucky Star

We felt very uncomfortable here, and it was a low point in an otherwise magical trip to Sri Lanka. The owners are German, while we wanted our spending to support Sri Lankan owned businesses and local Sri Lankans. They also only took cash, the only place we encountered that, which made me wonder whether they declare their income and pay taxes. We booked the ‘Deluxe Room with Balcony and Sea View’. It was dirty, with a cockroach inside as soon as we arrived. The decor was in very poor taste, and the furniture was cheap and uncomfortable. The owner didn't try to engage with us. She stood at the top of the steps staring as we arrived and never greeted us. Her behaviour felt creepy. We asked for a Ceylon tea bag to make tea in our room, but they refused even though there were tea bags in the kitchen. It was a small thing, but it felt ungenerous and inhospitable, the opposite of our stays at other places owned and run by Sri Lankans. Getting there was awful too. The winding dirt track was hard even for tuk tuks, let alone cars, and there were no signs, so we kept thinking we'd reached a dead end. Avoid.
