Mount Queen Hotel Haputale

The view is breathtaking, and the place is decent for the price. I stayed two nights, but the staff weren't friendly and there wasn't even tea or food available while I was there. If you just need somewhere to sleep, it could work.

The rooms have great views, and the sunrise in the morning is amazing. The people are good, the rooms are average, and the food was tasty, though a little expensive. Getting there is the big problem: the private road up to the hotel is extremely steep and hard to drive. Some room door locks don't work, and the hot water system is in poor condition.

The view was great, and the rooms were okay, though the bathrooms weren't nice. We stayed because it was late, after the price and room count changed between the phone call and our arrival ten minutes later: first they said four rooms at 4000 RS each, then it was two rooms with enough beds at 6500 each. Dinner was a mess. We ordered at 18:45, but the menu had few choices and the waiter said some things weren't available. At 19:45 staff came back to say four dishes we'd ordered an hour earlier couldn't be made and asked us to choose again. The alternative was supposed to take 20-30 minutes, but the first meal arrived at 20:45 and the last at 21:00. The sandwiches tasted inedible; the rest was decent but very bland. I wouldn't recommend it.

The staff were really friendly and helpful, and the food they did have was great, though there wasn't much to choose from. The top floor has a great view, but the place felt a little expensive. We had no hot water, which was really hard in the cold weather and didn't seem reasonable for the price. There were cobwebs everywhere, maybe from low maintenance, and no bathroom footwear. You might want to bring a full survival kit. The phone line was always unresponsive.
