Waypoint Arugam Bay

For a first trip to Arugam Bay, Way Point made a great base. You can choose between dorms and double rooms, and the whole place feels easygoing and welcoming. The staff were kind and helpful, and getting there is simple since it's right on the main stretch, handy when you arrive by highway bus. The bathrooms were clean, with private showers, and there are lockers, so bring a padlock. Beds were comfortable, and the outdoor seating area was nice for relaxing or meeting people. There’s also a juice bar for cooling off after time in the sun. With a scooter, bike, or car, you can get around to the beaches, surf spots, and local cafés. A convenient, laid-back place to stay.

Being close to the beach and most of the restaurants, bars, and shops is a real plus. The rooms are very plain, though, and could do with more comfort or equipment, especially the bed. There weren't really any activities while I was there, so meeting other travelers was difficult. Fine for a quick stay, but probably not ideal if you want a lively, social hostel.

I planned on staying three days at Waypoint hostel and ended up extending to five. The big common area makes it easy to meet other travelers, and the hostel has a nice social feel. Roshan, the manager, was a huge help, from pointing me to the best ATM to arranging a taxi for my next stop and suggesting surf instructors. The dorm rooms are basic, but the lockers are large. I also loved the rooftop yoga session with Nathalie, one of my best moments in Sri Lanka.

We were drawn to Wave Point because it’s right by the beach and reasonably priced. Watching the sunrise was one of my favorite things to do there, along with swimming and surfing. The staff were always ready to help, whether we needed something for our room or ideas for places to eat, and the service has been the best we've had so far. I feel the same way as my friends who’ve reviewed it. If we return to Arugam Bay, we already know where we’ll stay. Thanks to Wave Point and Mr. Sharbeen for making us feel so welcome.
