For a different glimpse of Colombo's past, Bamba Flats is a gritty, atmospheric place to visit. It's been used in lots of movies, commercials, and TV shows, especially the well-known 'Janelaya' (window). Many of us have passed by without knowing its significance. If you're interested in history, the housing complex has a fascinating backstory to dig into. Residents say bodies were found more than once at a spot called "Murder Corner".

Restaurants in Colombo and the train station are both very close by.
The open spaces and nearby ocean make this a lovely place to bring up children in the city. For a government-run local housing scheme, the shared areas are kept surprisingly clean. I'd say it's the best housing scheme in central Colombo.
A sea breeze is one of the things that draws people here. This is one of Colombo's oldest housing schemes, and there are no lifts. Residents have a large playground and a tennis court, with many useful shops right on the premises: Highland milk bar, The Fab, fruit and vegetable shops, a bookshop offering printing and photocopying, groceries, a pharmacy, and separate Anoma salons for boys and girls.
It's among the oldest places in Colombo, with fairly spacious, large apartments. There are also plenty of handy shops and a salon nearby.
