Mount Lavinia House

The staff’s attitude at breakfast was one of the worst parts of our stay. The food manager interrupted us over a booking problem caused by the hotel’s own poor record keeping, and handled it in a way that embarrassed and inconvenienced us instead of sorting it out discreetly. The room also had cockroaches and lizards, lacked coffee and creamers, and requests sent through WhatsApp took an unreasonable time to get answered. There was a phone with service and reception numbers, but it was just decorative and didn’t work. Service was poor right from check-in. After our long journey, we asked for water and were told, “Sir, you will be charged for it.” That set the tone. We’ve stayed at several 4-star and 5-star places around Sri Lanka, and this was easily the worst hotel experience we had in Colombo. The hotel didn’t make us feel welcome or cared for. If someone offered me a free stay, I’d pay them to get me out of it.

The pool attendant was alert and responsible, and we appreciated him warning our child away from the deep end. The food was also very good, with a variety of tasty dishes. But some buffet items weren’t replenished after they ran out, and the areas around us weren’t as clean as expected. Staff also left our finished plates on the table several times until we asked for them to be cleared. Better attention to cleanliness, general service and buffet refills would improve the experience. We stayed at Mount Lavinia Hotel from 1st to 2nd May 2026.

The hotel's seaside setting and history are lovely, but they couldn’t make up for the poor upkeep, cleanliness and service. The room had visible fungus and mold, and a strong, persistent urine smell from the bathroom made it very uncomfortable to use. Lobby sofas were stained, dirty and sticky, and there were flies in several common and dining areas. Reception staff were unprofessional and unhelpful, and basic requests were met with indifference. For a place presented as a premium destination, this was a very disappointing stay. I can’t recommend it in its current state. Management needs to deal with these problems urgently if it wants to maintain its reputation.

The pool itself was enjoyable and well maintained, and breakfast was acceptable, with a reasonable choice and satisfactory quality. Those were the few bright spots in a stay that otherwise fell far below expectations. My family and I were in Rooms 252, 208, and 209 at Hotel Mount Lavinia, and I can’t recommend it based on our experience. The pool changing rooms were filthy, smelled like a badly kept public toilet, and had cockroaches running around. In our rooms there was a strong musty smell, signs of moisture and ventilation problems, and a general sense of neglect. The bathrooms weren’t properly cleaned, and their shower curtains were black with visible mold and fungal growth. We were missing basic items, including complimentary water, toothbrushes, tea or coffee sachets, and all but one bath towel. We had to contact housekeeping and guest services repeatedly before some of these were brought. The air conditioning made a lot of noise but barely cooled the rooms, and power interruptions sometimes left us in total darkness, with no reliable backup power apparent. Check-in was unpleasant too. Priyadarshani at the front desk was rude, dismissive and seemed uninterested in helping. The hotel appears to rely on its historic reputation, but its charm doesn’t excuse these maintenance and service problems. It feels like an aging property that hasn’t kept up with current hospitality standards. Other hotels in Sri Lanka offer cleaner rooms, more professional service and much better value. The building’s heritage deserves care and investment, and history alone can’t sustain the guest experience.
