Our third stop in Sri Lanka became one of the most memorable. We could have stayed a couple more nights. Nine Skies looks over a lush valley toward a Buddhist temple on the opposite slope, and at certain times you can hear chanting drifting across. It’s wonderfully calming. The food was a highlight every time. Chef Dhanu has created something special, with a strong team behind him. We chose Nine Skies to renew our wedding vows, and the staff put so much care and enthusiasm into making it a beautiful, heartfelt occasion. We were genuinely moved. Huge thanks to Udara, Melinda, Salinda, and Kaloo the dog. One small thing for anyone new to this part of Sri Lanka: there are leeches. We’d never come across them before, but the hotel has plenty of prevention measures and is quick to help if one gets on you. It was honestly a change from mosquitos! If you’re nervous, a little alcohol-based hand sanitiser makes them drop right off with one squirt.

Nine Skies in Ella was easily our favorite place during the 16 days my wife and I spent in Sri Lanka. We stayed on our own, with the entire property and staff to ourselves, which felt like such a treat. The location was perfectly tucked away from Demodara and Ella, and our room was private and air-conditioned. We’d happily come back again and again. The chef is fantastic, so don’t miss a meal. Thanks to the whole team, from Milinda to Kasun and all the guys in the kitchen. It was amazing, and we found it very hard to leave.

The service and food were the best we had in Sri Lanka. It’s an intimate place, in the former home of a tea plantation manager, with incredible views near the Nine Arches Bridge.

There’s a lovely sense of time moving more slowly here, with a touch of the past. The service is extraordinary, and the place feels totally magical. I could have stayed for a long time.
