The caretaker was kind and always smiling, the room was clean, the beds were fine, and the food was good. But the shower water came out light brown from every faucet we used. We saw a solar water heater that didn’t seem to work, so it was a cold shower in a cold place. We mentioned it to the caretaker, but he either didn’t understand or already knew, and didn’t seem concerned. This was the only bad experience on our three-week Sri Lankan trip. We stayed after hiking stages 10 and 11 of the Pekoe Trail, and I’d suggest booking ahead since there’s almost no service from stage 10 at Horton Plains through stage 12. The owner is the person you speak to on the phone, not the person you meet there. Check the price carefully: we asked for a room for two, and the owner said 7,000 including food. The next morning we were charged double. My wife and I both heard the call on speaker and had double-checked to avoid confusion. It was an issue of integrity, and nothing similar happened anywhere else on the trail after we trekked all the way from Kandy.
