The Cubes Ella Hotel

The staff really made our stay. They were so kind and accommodating. Breakfast was nice, with a good range of food, and the restaurant had lovely views even though a new building unfortunately blocked the view from our room. It’s a lovely little hotel in the mountains. Our room was spacious and clean, with all the amenities you need. It’s about a 10-minute tuk tuk ride into Ella town, and cars can have a hard time getting to the hotel. I’d definitely recommend it.

Primal runs the kitchen and is a very good cook. The food was excellent, cooked to order and spiced to your taste. You can watch Sidhavshan, Isuzu and Pemachandra working through the kitchen window. The whole kitchen team puts in a lot of effort. Rishard and Nethmi gave us a very warm welcome, and the whole team came out to carry our bags. That set the tone for the stay: nothing was too much trouble, and everything was done with care. Our rooms were lovely and cleaned and tidied every day. The hotel has a relaxed atmosphere and is well maintained by Chanaka and Pemachandra. The new bedroom pods they’re just finishing look great, with beautiful views and the railway in the background. We had a fantastic stay and would recommend it.

The Sri Lankan breakfast was the best choice, though you need to order it the night before. There was construction in the area for another property, so we heard noise throughout the day. Mr. Rishad, the manager, was fantastic: really friendly, full of good tips, and he runs the hotel very well. The rooms were clean and spacious. The Cubes is a short tuk tuk ride from Ella city, and I definitely recommend staying outside town if you want a more peaceful stay with less of the party-tourist feel.

We stayed at The Cubes Ella from 30th October to 1st November and had a really good time. The views of the surrounding mountains, and partly down into the valley, were beautiful. Service was lovely, and both the Western and Sri Lankan breakfasts were delicious. The hotel’s tuk-tuk driver, Amal, was a particular highlight. He works closely with the property and charges genuinely fair prices, which makes the distance to the city centre, not very appealing anyway, irrelevant. A great place to stay in Ella.
