The Rock Face

There’s plenty within walking distance, including restaurants, shops, and services. The place sits up a small hill, about a three-minute walk from the main road, but the views make up for it. The road itself is busy and noisy, so this is a quieter spot. The kind ladies who run the hotel helped with everything, made delicious breakfasts, and didn’t mind when I had to change my dates. The room was comfortable and had a terrace, and I used the laundry service for a very reasonable price. I can’t think of anything bad to say and hope to stay here again.

The second room we were given after complaining was much better. The location is close to the Main Street, though the hill should be mentioned clearly. It’s very steep and could be dangerous for anyone with mobility issues, and music from the bars carries into the room because there’s no soundproofing. Our first room was a disaster. We arrived in the evening, went out for dinner, and only noticed the state of it when we returned: it was extremely dirty, with cobwebs, squashed mosquitoes on the wall, and stains on the sheet. The owner confirmed that the family room came with covers but no blankets for all four beds. Given the condition of everything, we couldn’t tell how clean the covers were. There were only two face towels and no bath towels. Neither bathroom had hot water. The owner confirmed there wasn’t hot water from the tap and said that seemed standard in town. The water heater socket right beside the shower seemed dangerous, and they looked surprised that we raised it.

We never made it to the rooms, so I can’t rate them. The driveway was too steep to walk up, and too steep for our rental tuk-tuks as well. I’m 63 and was struggling, and we didn’t want to leave our vehicles somewhere else. The hotel had been told we needed tuk-tuk access but hadn’t warned us it wasn’t possible. We cancelled, the owners accepted that, and we found somewhere else a little out of town with vehicle access.

The rooms were decent, but the washroom facilities let us down. Water pressure was very low, and after our first night they didn’t leave us water or tea bags for the second day, which made no sense. The location is right in the centre, though it takes a 100-metre uphill hike from the main road to reach the hotel. That could be hard if you’re travelling with older people or children. When we checked out, they arranged a car to take our luggage down.
